Prestressed hollow core slabs

Prestressed hollow core slabs

As a ceiling manufacturer, we offer high-quality prestressed hollow core slabs. Among other things, prestressed hollow core ceiling is a construction solution that significantly reduces the time of construction work and minimizes the cost of such work.

We also offer our other prefabricated products, including Zeran slabs, filigree slabs and prefabricated balconies.

SPK slabs are one of the types of prefabricated floors, that is, floors assembled from pre-manufactured ready-made elements. Nowadays it is one of the most popular ceilings among both individual investors and developers.

The popularity of prestressed floors is due, among other things, to their good load-bearing properties and is quick and easy to install. Prestressed hollow core slabs (also known as HC slabs) also have an attractive price per square meter of floor.

HC prestressed panels basic information

HC slabs are prefabricated, prestressed concrete elements designed for the construction of floors. They are used both in residential, office or public buildings. But their properties work especially well in warehouse, commercial or industrial buildings, that is, where large spaces without any walls or partitions are expected, where floor slabs must have significant spans.

All pre-stressed hollow core slabs are produced in a modular width of 120 cm, but unlike pre-stressed hollow core slabs, they offer the possibility of both longitudinal and diagonal cutting.

Prestressed concrete slabs can also be used in places where it is required to pass all kinds of installations through the ceiling. The design of the slab makes it possible to make holes and cutouts in already at the stage of production (holes are made to make installation passages and for ventilation ducts).

Prestressed hollow core slab and its technical parameters

Prestressed hollowcore slab is a floor slab made of C40/50 or C50/60 class reinforced concrete. The prestressing reinforcement is selected according to the needs of the project on the basis of the design documentation. Strings can be arranged in one or two rows, depending on the type of slab, fire resistance requirements and environmental conditions (exposure class).

The side surfaces of the slabs are formed in the form of longitudinal notches designed to ensure proper cooperation of adjacent slabs in transferring loads and prevent keyboarding during the use of the ceiling.

Depending on the type, prestressed plates, have several channels. They can have from four to seven longitudinal channels. These channels are longitudinal voids, stretching across the entire span of the slab, which serve to reduce its weight. The channels are spaced evenly across the width of the precast. The geometry of the entire slab is usually found in the design.

Prestressed hollow floor slabs are produced in a modular width of 120 cm, but have the ability to be cut both longitudinally and diagonally. Most importantly, by the fact that pre-stressed slabs can be shaped we have more possibilities to adapt them to the characteristics of the building. This largely allows a certain degree of design freedom. Prestressed slabs are therefore quite popular for the construction of single-family houses.

Unlike Zeran hollow core slabs, which are produced in essentially one height, HC prestressed slabs are produced in several standard heights: 20, 26, 32, 40 and 50 cm. The structural height of the floor is determined by the project specifications, the structural requirements of the building, the expected load-bearing capacity of the floor, its span. Ceilings are selected on the basis of the project documentation provided by the investor.

In residential construction or in office and public buildings, the most commonly used is a prestressed hollow core slab with a height of 20 or 26 cm and a maximum span of up to 13 m. Prestressed hollow floor slab with spans of more than 13 m is already produced in thicknesses of 32, 40 cm and more. For maximum hollow floor spans (about 20 m), the prestressed hollow floor slab must already be 50 cm thick.

SPK panels provide quite good acoustic comfort. Installation of prestressed hollow core slabs is a big cost reduction, as they are assembled in a few hours by crane installation. The slabs do not require additional processing, only filling the joints between the slabs.

Prestressed hollow core slabs

Hollow core slabs are a modern solution for prefabricated floors. They allow the construction of many types of buildings, from single-family houses to public buildings. Thanks to their properties, which allow for freedom of shape, they can be freely adapted to a given building.

The attractive price of prestressed hollow core slabs also has an impact on their popularity among investors.

HC hollow core panels and their installation instructions

The following is an abbreviated instruction on how to install a prestressed hollow core slab ceiling and the basic principles of installation.

Transportation of the SPK board

It is necessary to ensure that a vehicle with a length of 16 m and a weight of 40 tons can enter the site. An assembly crane (crane with traverse) is required for unloading. Slabs for transport should be properly secured with straps to prevent slipping off the transport platform.

They should be placed on appropriate spacers. In order to avoid the storage of prestressed hollow core slabs at the construction site, they can be delivered in the correct order according to the installation diagram.

Installation of prestressed hollow core slabs using a crosshead

Transfer of prestressed hollow core slabs

Prestressed concrete slabs can be carried only by means of a crosshead equipped with special jaw handles, the slabs should be secured from underneath with safety chains. Slabs can be handled only in the horizontal position. Prestressed slabs cut lengthwise or prestressed slabs with cutouts can be transported on belts or using chains with hooks. Here it should be remembered that slings must not be used at an angle exceeding 60°, risking damage to the item being moved.

Storage of prestressed hollow core slabs

SPK hollow core slabs should be stored in stacks, on a leveled and hardened surface, using 2 wooden shims, placed 30-50 cm from the end of the slabs, perpendicular to their length. Plates of the same length and the same strength parameters should be stored in one stack and the height of the stack should not exceed 2 m.

Slit hollowcore slabs and slabs with cutouts should be stacked on top of the stack.

Storage of hollow core slabs on the construction site

Installation of prestressed hollow core slabs

A crane with a traverse is required for the installation of prestressed panels. Using the traverse, the slabs are placed on the prepared walls (on neoprene pads or a layer of mortar). It is permissible to directly rest the slabs, without a layer of mortar and shims, on steel or other beams with a smooth, even surface. After the slabs are carefully laid, reinforcement is placed in the gaps between the slabs and the joints are poured with concrete mixture so that the slabs work together.

Before concreting, the slabs should be wetted generously with water so that they do not absorb water from the batch mix. The HC slab is also equipped with plugs for individual channels. The blanking plugs prevent the concrete mixture from getting inside when making rims.

What are the advantages of prestressed hollow core slabs?

Here’s a look at some of the key advantages of the ducted-compression ceiling.

No wet work

In the case of ceilings made of prefabricated prestressed hollow core slabs, it is generally not necessary to perform monolithic elements on site, i.e. so-called wet work. Such work is necessary only in places where, for technical reasons, the monolithic slab must remain, for example, in places where the hollow core slab is connected to stairs or balconies.

Installation of the ceiling without mounting supports

Prestressed hollow core ceilings are installed without the need for mounting supports. The lack of stamping and formwork of the ceiling has a positive effect on the cost of the entire investment and the time of its implementation. Without assembly supports, finishing work on the lower floors can begin almost immediately after the floor slabs are placed.

Floor span

Prestressed hollow core ceilings, with a relatively low structural height, have large load-bearing capacities and spans exceeding 14 m. It is also possible to produce slabs with spans exceeding even 20 m, making them ideal for large industrial projects.

No ceiling keying

When prestressed floor slabs are properly installed, there is no keying effect, i.e. cracks and scratches in the ceiling. The lateral edges of the prestressed slab are designed precisely to protect the ceiling from adverse changes that may occur during use. We recommend the use of neoprene pads under the hollow core slabs.

Top-class materials

High-quality materials used in the production of prestressed slabs give them their characteristic properties, including the ability to carry heavy loads, achieve significant spans, high weather resistance or better sound insulation. SPK hollow core slabs are made of concrete of class C40/50 or C50/60. Reinforcement is provided by seven-strand steel strings at the bottom of the slab, stretched during the production process.
