Prefabricated foundation beams are prefabricated reinforced concrete foundation beams used most often in industrial construction – in skeletal structures of industrial halls and in road construction – most often as reinforced concrete beams under noise barriers.

Prefabricated reinforced concrete foundations combined with prefabricated columns, footings (footings) make it possible to dispense with the construction of traditional foundations. Instead of foundation walls, foundation walls are just used.

What are precast foundations and why should you be interested in this solution? Read on to learn how reinforced concrete foundations can speed up and simplify work on the construction site. Where are prefabricated foundations most often used and what to pay attention to when placing an order?

Foundation beams or prefabricated foundation – what is it?

Prefabricated foundations, concrete foundations, foundation beams, foundation walls, prefabricated foundation walls, reinforced concrete foundation – these are the terms we encounter most often.

Concrete foundations are otherwise horizontal beams (although in the case of beams, the height of which can be up to 2 m, the term wall would be more appropriate) that form the basis of the actual walls of the building. In the construction of frame buildings, the foundations are placed between the individual columns (on which the main weight of the entire structure is supported). The prefabricated foundation, being the first, lowest layer on which the actual wall rests, acts as an intermediate foundation, transferring loads to the footings (and not to the ground). Thanks to this construction, the actual wall is elevated above ground level.

Prefabricated foundation beams in industrial construction

In industrial, large-scale buildings with frame construction, foundations are used at ground level as foundation walls, with which the building surface is enclosed.

The quality of the surface finish of the foundation depends on the investor’s requirements. They can be made in face concrete technology, with smooth or washed facade concrete texture.

Reinforced concrete ground beams are produced on the basis of project documentation, so their size is always adapted to the requirements of the project. Reinforced concrete foundation maximum dimensions usually do not exceed 7 m in length and 2 in height.

The foundation sill can be produced as a single-layer element, in which case thermal insulation is carried out at the construction site, or as multi-layer elements with an insulation layer made of, for example, polystyrene foam, styrodur, PIR/PUR foam or mineral wool. If the foundations are to be set on footings, appropriate undercuts are made in them, according to the design documentation. Similarly, already at the stage of prefabrication, appropriate undercuts are made when the foundations are to be installed in the places of entrance gates or other doorways. Very often they are then equipped with appropriate steel fittings to protect the edges of the prefabricated elements.

In addition to steel hardware, prefabricated foundations can be equipped with a variety of system accessories to facilitate their connection with other elements of the building structure, such as corrugated pipes, anchor rails and transport hooks.

The foundation shall be protected with a damp proofing membrane on site.

Prefabricated foundations in road construction

In road construction, prefabricated foundations are most often used as supports for noise barriers. They are used in the construction of noise barriers both on roads or highways and on railroads.

Prefabricated reinforced concrete foundations are installed at the bottom of acoustic screens, they are the lowest layer on which the actual wall, already made of sound-absorbing materials, rests. They are placed between steel or reinforced concrete columns. The prefabricated foundation beam is produced in dimensions resulting from the design documentation. Most often these modules are 2/3/4/5 meters in length. In order to facilitate the installation of the foundations themselves, as well as the soundproofing elements, the foundations are equipped with appropriate mounting and transport brackets.

Prefabricated elements are finding increasingly widespread use in construction, not just industrial construction. In the case of large real estate development projects as well as in single-family construction, simple solutions using prefabricated building structural elements are increasingly being used.
